The Mojique drawing guide

How to make art with emojis

Mojique is a free online canvas for drawing with emojis. Build illustrations, portraits, patterns, and collages directly in your browser, with no account needed.

Think of each emoji as a shape and a patch of color. A dark circle can become an eye, a yellow face can add a highlight, and repeated leaves can create texture. Their meaning is up to you.

Start your first drawing

From the workspace, choose New canvas for a blank page or open a template to remix its composition. Choose a canvas size, then pick an emoji from the library.

  • Use Brush (B) to place one emoji with a click or draw a continuous trail by holding and dragging. Adjust the brush size for broad shapes or small details.
  • Open Brush effects to change spacing or try Confetti, Mirror, and Kaleidoscope. Closer spacing makes a dense texture; wider spacing leaves the individual emojis visible.
  • Block in the large shapes first, then zoom in for details. Hold Space and drag to move around the canvas; use a two-finger gesture to pan and zoom on touchscreens.

Find emojis by color

Open By color in the emoji library when you need a visual match instead of a particular symbol. Mojique compares the colors of the emojis as they appear on your device.

  • Choose a quick color, use the color picker, or enter a six-digit hex value such as #E14B4B. The closest matching emojis appear first.
  • Filter by Light, Medium, or Dark to find highlights, midtones, and shadows. Color matches are approximate because an emoji can contain several colors.
  • For an emoji portrait or mosaic, choose a small palette and build from dark shapes toward lighter details. Similar colors with different silhouettes help create texture without relying on what an emoji means.

Select, move, and layer

Each placed emoji remains an object you can arrange. Move and Select are separate tools, so you can adjust one mark or work with a whole part of your illustration.

  • Choose Move (V) and hover over an emoji to preview the target, then drag it. Shift + click adds an emoji to the selection or removes it.
  • Choose Select (S) and drag a rectangle around the emojis you want. Drag the selection to move them together, or use the arrow keys for small adjustments; hold Shift for larger steps.
  • Use the selection controls to move the group forward or backward, bring it to the front, send it to the back, or delete it. Ctrl / Command + A selects all emojis while Move or Select is active.

Choose how to erase

The eraser removes whole emojis. It does not cut pixels out of their shapes. Choose the mode that matches the change you want to make.

  • Area removes every emoji touched by the circular eraser, including overlapping emojis underneath. Adjust its size to clear a broad region or a smaller space.
  • One emoji removes the frontmost emoji under the pointer, once per gesture. Release and click again to remove another without clearing the layers beneath it in one pass.
  • For an exact group, use Select and delete the selection instead. Undo restores an accidental erasure so you can try a smaller area or a different mode.

Replay your process

The timeline lets you revisit how your artwork developed. Press Play or P to watch your marks appear in sequence, then pause or use the timeline to inspect a moment.

  • Replay previews the drawing history. Press Escape to return from the preview to editing your current canvas.
  • In Export, choose video to share the process. Full keeps the complete sequence; the 5-, 10-, and 30-second choices make a shorter timelapse.
  • Choose the available video resolution for your use. Video uses MP4 where supported and may use WebM in other browsers; video export depends on browser support.

Export and keep a backup

Your canvases are saved in this browser on this device. They are not uploaded to an account or automatically synced between devices, and clearing browser data can remove them.

  • Choose Export and PNG to save a finished image. Enable a transparent background when you want to place your emoji art over another design.
  • Open Commands and choose Download editable backup to save a .mojique.json file. This keeps the project and its history so you can continue editing, unlike an image or video.
  • Use Import project in the workspace to open a backup, including on another device. Keep a recent copy somewhere you trust. Emoji appearance can differ between operating systems.
